I didn’t make it

My grandmother died early this morning, alone except for her nurses, in New Mexico.

Last night, the hospice nurse called, and said she didn’t know if she’s be coherent by the time we got there Thursday. I spent hours on the phone with American Airlines, and got the earliest flight I could; Friday at 7:35 am (today and tomorrow are full. Blame spring break).

This morning, my mother called me on her way to work. She’s going to ask Frontier Airlines to do their best to get her and my sister out to NM from CO on a flight tomorrow.

4 weeks ago, my grandmother was admitted to the hospital. They thought she had pneumonia. She didn’t. It was lung cancer.

3 weeks ago, we were told 6-8 months.

2 weeks ago, her hospice nurse said she thought it was more like 6-8 weeks.

6 days ago, her nursing home nurse told us he thought she’d make it for at least 4 weeks.

Last night, her hospice nurse let us know she might not be coherent by Sunday, but thought she’d be fine for another week or two.

Just keep in mind how quickly things move. Tell everyone you love how much you love them. That is the only thing we have keeping us together.
