One Million Faces Project

Recently, through the Vagina Monologues, I met an amazing woman and photographer, the lovely Peggy Dyer. She took some beautiful photos at the show, such as this:

and this:

She is also working on an amazing project, and all the proceeds will go to charitable organizations. She’s trying to photograph ONE MILLIONS FACES across the country in 2009.  Check out her site: OneMillionFaces.org.  Below is what she has to say about her project.

-Essin’ Em

“I’ve seen a million faces, and I ROCKED them all.”

-Wanted, Dead or Alive, Bon Jovi

“I was driving down into Boulder on Thursday night (Feb 26, 2009) Bon Jovi, “Wanted Dead or Alive” was playing on the radio. My heart skipped a beat when I heard him sing.

“I’ve seen a million faces, and I rocked them all!”

Inspiration struck, my heart skipped a beat,

I got an idea.

I wondered if I’d photographed a million faces over the course of my career?

Away from questions, my mind raced for action. I bet I can photograph a million faces in 2009.

I bet that I can raise millions of dollars for local charities across the country.

So I started talking about it. I mentioned it to all my friends, I mentioned it to Deirdre from MESA before I read in the V-Day show on Friday night. “Sure you can set up a photo booth at the shows, and we’d love to be your first charity.” Sat morning, I photographed an event for the Davis Phinney Foundation at Flatiron’s Athletic Club. Amy asked if I could be in Birmingham, Alabama on April 4th to photograph their Victory Summit. SURE! You see, I’m on my way to Naples, FL for the arrival of my 1st nephew (we’re expecting him around the 19th).

Road trips RULE!

After I finished the shoot, I raced around doing the admin legwork and getting supplies. I arrived at the St Julian, and with the help of my assistant, Ron, we got the light and background set up and photographed the first 28 faces.

The first 28 of one million faces -

I created the One Million Faces Project to paint a portrait of America.

I want to inspire a sense of connection, and community, and spread hope, love and peace all along the way.

In less than 1 week, I’ve heard from people across the world interested in participating.

I believe that if I can inspire people to create, to laugh that more light will shine.

Let’s change the world, one face at a time.”

What a cool project! I love the idea – and yet I couldn’t resist and do the basic math… one million faces in one year… that amounts to over over 2700 faces a day!

Nevertheless a lovely idea. Who donates the money? The people getting photographed?

Yup! She ask for a $5 (or more) donation :) Depending on where you are, she might be in a city near you soon!
