First, I'd like to point out that we aren't related, in spite of any similarity in names :-)

If somebody needs more than 10 minutes to get you suspended, they don't know what they are doing! Anyway, if the rope is applied right, the tying IS play time and not something to be rushed to get to the 'main event'. It's like going out for a nice meal. The objective is not just to fill your belly as quickly as possible but to enjoy the ambience, company, presentation, texture, flavour etc. For example: http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?docid=7664946402249303543#

ooh, i love rope. i love the feel of it, and the look and the looks my baby gives me.

but it is time-consuming, and it doesn't really happen often for that reason and others.

also, though, the fact that it is more complicated and time consuming than other things is sometimes nice - i find it relaxing and sweet.

There's nothing like hands-on practice. It helps for me to make a distinction between practice time and play time. Practice time being when you give your very generous bottom something else to distract them for awhile (a movie, someone else to talk to, etc) and you practice doing ties or working out trouble spots, over and over again; but no one is expecting to get anything sexual or invigorating out of the experience.

As for as other resources go, two knotty boys have a youtube channel with some good stuff, though mostly fancy decorative knots. And twisted monk has some good, basic instructional videos on his website.

I've found most public rope events to be super hetero and man-dom oriented, which isn't a scene i love overly much, but usually people are pretty nice in any case.
