Who am I?
I’m Essin’ Em, your friendly neighborhood feminist, queer, fierce Femme, politically active, disabled, questioning, pondering sexologist and sex educator. Not only am I personally well-versed and involved in the world of sexuality, I have my Master’s in Human Sexuality Education from Widener University.
This blog is full of thoughts discussions about the full spectrum of sexuality, sex toy/porn/book reviews (all reviewed by yours truly of course!), pieces of my personal life (yes, including snippets of sex stories), poignant news relating to sexuality, sex tips, video blogs and the (more than) occasional opinion piece with rants, rages, and questions about things relevant to sexuality. Oh! And amusing tidbits and awkward moments. I write what I think and feel – these opinions are representative of myself, and no one else.
I am: a college graduate, a graduate school graduate, a feminist, a daughter, a sister, queer, dyke-a-delic, a social activist, pansexual, open to all genders, attracted to whomever I am attracted to, a fierce femme, interested in human sexuality, owner and lover of three cats, engaged, in love with Q, eclectic, unique, quirky, non-monogamous, allergic to pink, a vegetarian for 18 years and counting, an insomniac, an internet addict, a non-smoker, an agnostic, a Jewish Humanist, a minister for the Universal Life Church, a friend, a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, a counselor, a kid, an adult, a woman, a female, a sexual assault survivor, someone working to prevent sexual assault, a dancer (when it doesn’t hurt), a chocoholic, in love with reading books all the time, a crime show watcher, a Buffy lover, a chick-flick hater, a cook, a sleep lover, a lover of girly drinks and wine, someone who loves to shake it with the best of them (when it doesn’t hurt), a former theatre teacher, a former figure skater, a former hockey player, a roller derby (former) skater, former derby referee and lover, a triple knee surgery survivor, an erotic story creator, a writer, a nude model, a clothed model, someone who loves to drive naked (as well as be naked!), a community outreach coordinator, a sex columnist/sex tips writer, an ethical pornorgrapher, someone in the adult entertainment industry, a sex worker, a sex toy reviewer, a writer…and much much more.

Hi Shanna,
I was at your excellent Sex and Disabilities workshop at Sex 2.0 (very well led and lots of important insights in your remarks) – and I was the guy who was standing up that spoke in the workshop on safety and free speech, who you spoke afterwards. As I was listening to you I was kicking myself for not referring in my remarks to your very well prepared and thought-through comments at the beginning of the meeting on the importance of safety first, which I agreed with – it was a brilliant response to the ill-conceived Carnal Nation editorial that stirred up this mess. I thought the analogy with outlawing guns in bars was very smart, pointing out that the right to safety takes precedence over the right to bear arms in that situation. Your comments helped me better understand that a conference like this has a very special responsibility to protect the safety of the sex workers who attend, or might want to attend, or may otherwise wish to be involved. I don’t have all the answers to all the problems, but you helped me understand the key questions, and who needs to be in the middle of finding the right solutions.
I most of all just want to say I truly appreciated your presentations and presence at the conference. Thanks!
