Overview of educational cyber security initiatives – European Cyber Security Month
As we mentioned some time ago, according to the project of the Research and Academic Computer Network (NASK), October is the month when the main focus is on education about the web. During the event every year the issues of online threats and possible tactics for protection in high-risk situations are discussed. Cyber Security Month is also an opportunity to submit your initiative. Today we will review the most interesting ones from the educational segment.
Some time ago we touched on the October phenomenon. During the annual European Cyber Security Month event, you can participate in workshops, conferences, campaigns and initiatives that are submitted by external entities in the form of organizations and individuals involved in online security.
According to the event’s homepage panel view, the initiatives are divided into either educational or for adult users.
Educational Initiatives
In fact the whole procedure has an educational character. It is aimed at the aspects of pro-safe behaviour and general existence on the web, but also in the context of contact with devices having access to it. Under the enigmatic slogan of educational initiatives is hidden a set of these actions, reported by scientific and educational institutions and educational establishments. Surprisingly and very hearteningly, the greatest activity is shown by elementary school and kindergartens. Looking through the website of the initiatives, after titles such as “Dream smartphone”; “Safe preschooler in a virtual world” and “Safe Computer Day 2021” one can really smile, imagining all those young people who created educational materials with a smile, themselves gaining knowledge necessary in today’s reality.
„Let’s take care of relationships online”, I Liceum Ogólnokształcące im. Tadeusz Kosciuszko Library in Legnica
This report initiates computer science teachers and educators to conduct special classes for all students of this school. For the first classes a lecture will be held with the sonorous title: Social media – our world or just a tool. Second graders of this school will learn the specifics of digital traces that we leave on the Internet. Third graders will learn who follows us online. A special paper will be prepared in the school library with rules for safe use of social media profiles. It is noble to build healthy awareness in the young generation.
The lessons are scheduled to run for four days starting Oct. 25, with up to 600 high school students participating. Bravo!
„Detecting disinformation online”, Pedagogical Provincial Library in Bielsko-Biała
Disinformation and fake news are one of the particularly growing phenomena in today’s world. They were even singled out in an extensive report produced by Cert. We are therefore glad that such an initiative dedicated to this subject has been created. The lessons are intended for students in grades 4-6. Will be conducted as part of the „Aces of the Internet” program;. The aim of these activities is to make students aware of the need to verify information, verifiability of sources, the dangers of spreading false information, and the topic of phishing will also be addressed.
Moreover, students are to be able to create and maintain a positive online reputation – can it be that the basics of piracy enter primary education?? Great news!
The event is scheduled to run through the end of the month and it is estimated that 80 participants will attend, but we are hoping that this number will be much higher! The program of the event is available here.
European Cyber Security Month at Lubasz Elementary School
This one-day event was held on the 11th of September.10.2021. It was a presentation of current threats and principles of safe banking. The meeting was organized by the Cooperative Bank in Czarnków and was attended by 240 elementary school students. We congratulate the bank for its commitment to education, as well as for its promotional sense among its future customers.
„Dream Smartphone”, Kindergarten No. 154 in Warsaw
It is a conversation about new technologies and the way they are used by adults and children. The idea as interesting as possible, especially since it is aimed at 5-year-olds! To activate them, they will have to make a dream smartphone using colored cards and app icons. Circle meeting aims to discuss smartphones and assign apps to specific categories. On the occasion of this game, a conversation will be held on the principles of safe use of devices connected to the Internet. The event will take place on October 21 and is aimed at 50 children. As you can see, education can be creative and interesting!
